Making Hand Hewn
Creating Hand Hewn Material |
The idea of using reclaimed lumber in constructing custom homes in Southern California began in the 1940's with a very creative and resourceful contractor. Jack Weir would scour the Pacific Northwest in search of just the right salvaged timbers he could use to create an authentic feel in the Spanish adobe haciendas he built in San Diego, La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas and Rancho Santa Fe. This design has gone on to become has become the default appearance in recreating the Early California Spanish hacienda from San Diego through Santa Barbara to Carmel, Monterey Peninsula and San Francisco. Although Jack is gone, his legacy lives on influencing the use of reclaimed lumber in high end architecture. Having been fortunate to have worked with Jack over the years as carpenters, the founders of Vintage Timberworks, Dennis Roberts and Jeff Husted, acquired the skills and the spirit involved in working with old recycled wood and carried on the tradition in many of their own, individual building projects. As time passed, they began to expand the use of reclaimed wood creating different appearances to appeal to a broader range of architectural styles ranging from rustic to contemporary. This in turn stimulated an increasing interest from owners, builders and architects who wanted to include something special and unique in their projects. They now devote their time to searching far and wide for the perfect reclaimed wood to include in your design. And yes, it is a lot of fun!

Burbank Skunkworks De-Construction

In addition to supplying recycled wood products, Vintage can frequently help you arrange for building de-construction and reclamation of reusable material across the United States. Although Vintage does not get involved directly with the de-construction itself, with our extensive contact network, we are happy to suggest contacts which may be able to help with your project. De-construction does require special skills and a progressive mind set, as it is usually more complicated than simple demolition, and finding an outfit capable of this can be challenging. Each project needs to be evaluated in terms of the value of the reclaimed material being used to offset the de-construction/demolition costs. Some will yield a profit while others will be lucky to break even. If you provide information regarding the inventory in your project including species, sizes, volumes and photos, we will advise you on the value of the reclaimed material. Please use the Request For Value form to request information. |
The cost of recycled lumber will vary with the species, grade, size, length, quantity, and surface appearance of the material required and whether the material is delivered in its as is condition or re-manufactured with a different appearance such as hand hewn or sawn Douglas Fir. Generally the cost of recycled lumber and beams in an “as is” condition will be more expensive than new, green lumber of like grade and size. The re-manufacturing process, if required, will add nominally to this cost base to offset the expense involved in cleaning, de-metaling, manufacturing, and in recycling the waste created during the process. Grading and fumigation, if required, will also add nominally to the cost. Bulk rate discounts are applied to large orders which utilize the material in an as is condition, are flexible in terms of sizes and lengths acceptable, and which are shipped directly from the de-construction job site. |
