summer update

 2010

Vintage Timberworks supplies reclaimed wood products for projects requiring architectural grade lumber, timbers, and flooring. It is the small touch our unique products give you which sets your project apart. Following are updates on new projects, servises and incoming inventory which you may find interesting. All products are FSC certified and eligible for LEED MR4 (materials reuse) and MR5 (regional materials) credits.

feature project
One of our architect/builders has created a masterpiece on the beach in Mexico. The hacienda features Vintage reclaimed barn beams in both rafter and truss applications along with rustic Douglas fir decking. The barn beams used to create the trusses and rafters were gray hand hewn barn beams (circa 1850) which were then lightly sanded to yield a soft antique brown patina. The original mortise pockets were filled creating a more refined appearance.

commercial projects
Recently, Vintage has seen a dramatic increase in interest from commercial designers. Projects such as restaurants, coffee houses, clothing stores, and pubs are increasingly turning to Vintage to supply that something special.

Commercial applications typically involve interior and exterior siding, flooring, shelving, tables, chairs, and countertops. The combination of the unique product appearance and the LEEDS points available tend to be the principle motivation for designers using Vintage reclaimed wood products, although many designers are inspired simply by the history behind the lumber. Can your project use a story?

Master Carpentry
Vintage offers in-house carpentry services ranging from building fine furniture to trusses.

Building trusses with reclaimed timber is truly an art form. Due to its character, the timbers are inherently uneven, lack uniformity, and can include some degree of twisting. It takes a master carpenter to be able to join the material like this together so that it looks like it has been there forever. Vintage has the technology and personnel to fabricate stunning trusses for you, ready for assembly on-site or ship the completed trusses ready to crane in place.

As with the trusses, creating open beam ceilings and roofs using reclaimed beams can be challenging. The carpentry needs to be done with skill and precision so that the roof has the appearance of having always been there and not just some old timbers slapped together for effect. If your carpenters are not up for the challenge, ours are. The roof system is carefully cut and assembled here at the yard. It is then labeled and disassembled for delivery. This takes a lot of the guesswork out of the building process. Vintage manufactured and installed the trusses showcased in the featured project above.

Well, the Port Alberni lumber has arrived and is everything we thought it would be…and more! The material includes 14x14, 12x12, and 4x12 in lengths from 10-40’. It has a circular sawn appearance with a brown patina and very tight grain. While it is predominantly Douglas fir, some of the 14x14 and 12x12 turned out to be western red cedar. The roof trusses yielded 8x8 and 8x10 10-30’ which are also circular sawn fir but with a white wash paint.
