Rustic Mantels & Corbels

RECLAIMED WOOD MANTELS

Making a great architectural statement can be as simple and inexpensive as incorporating one of our distinctive vintage reclaimed wood mantel and corbel combinations in your fireplace surround. Our recycled, rustic mantels and corbels are available in most species and surface appearances including reclaimed Douglas fir, redwood, cedar, and recycled live edge and hand hewn barn beams. In addition to using them under mantels, vintage corbels can be used mounted on the wall below horizontal truss members and flat ceiling beams to add more dimension to the design. Our unique articulating band saw allows us to cut almost any pattern you can dream up in widths up to 16″. For vintage corbel pattern suggestions, please refer to the diagram located at the bottom of the page.

Once you have decided on the wood species, appearance and size of your mantel and corbels, you can either call the office with your requirements or submit an inquiry using the “Request More Info” icon adjacent to the species and appearance you prefer. We will do our best to return the quote the same business day.

Our corbels are typically a custom order due to the range of appearances, sizes, and patterns available. Please inquire with our knowledgable staff for pricing and lead-times. Additionally we are able to cut almost any pattern you can dream up or would like us to match.

We typically carry a number of mantels in the Temecula showroom that are ready to go for customers looking to select a piece and take it with them.

Sanded Douglas Fir Mantel

Sanded Douglas fir mantels start with an “As Is” brown or gray timber which is then cut to length and lightly sanded reducing the splinters but retaining the original golden brown patina characteristic of aged Douglas fir. The back edge is also cut flat and straight on our bandsaw to help facilitate installation. The surface will have some degree of character marks which result from the nails and bolts we remove and checking resulting from air drying. If you would like to do the labor yourself, you can place an appointment to select the timber from the yard.

Resawn Douglas Fir Mantel

A fresh sawn appearance is created by putting the timber on our horizontal band saw and removing the original face on all four sides. This creates a perfectly straight piece at whatever exact dimensions you request. The appearance of the final product will be similar to that of re-sawn green timber although it will usually retain some degree of character marks and checking in the surface. The main difference being the dense grain of old growth wood and the stability of an old air dried beam. This material can be ordered with minimal character marks such as nail holes, bolts holes, checks, etc. The sawn appearance works well with contemporary architecture.

Ground Douglas Fir Mantel

An undulating, weathered appearance can be created using special sanders on our Douglas fir timbers. We grind and sand the surface removing some of the original  texture and patina and round the edges slightly. For more examples of this appearance please check out our ground Douglas fir beams in the gallery. If you would like to do the labor yourself, you can place an appointment to select the timber from the yard.

Hand Hewn Douglas Fir Mantel

Hand hewn Douglas fir mantels are one of our most popular fireplace mantels we sell. Using the same hand tools as the settlers, we can hand hew our Douglas fir timbers.  This removes all the patina and usually receives our wax finish applied to it after it’s installed to enhance its character. The material will retain its original character with nails holes and checking.

Surfaced Douglas Fir Mantel

A surfaced appearance on our resawn Douglas fir can be provided for a cleaner more refined look. The material can be ordered with more or less character such as nails holes, seasoning checks, etc. This material can also be ordered in whatever exact dimension you request. In an effort to preserve the knots, we typically use sanders to achieve this appearance instead of a planer.

Hand Hewn Barn Mantel

We inventory a huge selection of authentic hand hewn barn beams which are salvaged from antique structures such as barns and cabins dating back to the 1800’s. The material is a mix of hardwoods, which the original builder would have harvested from the original forest adjacent to the building site. The beams are usually square – 6×6, 8×8, 9×9, etc. The beams are typically hand hewn on four sides and contain the original mortise and tenon holes and pegs. The beams will have an existing gray or brown patina which can be lightly sanded to reveal a rich brown patina just below the surface. To process the mantels, we typically cut the back edge flat and straight, cut the beam to length and polish the ends, and lightly sand the exposed sides. Any mortises that are included in the beam, will be patched upon request. If you would like to do the labor yourself, you can place an appointment to select the timber from the yard.

Sawn Barn Mantel

Some of our barn beams were also created using a circular saw mill. These beams usually have a gray or brown surface which gets lightly sanded to result in a mellow brown patina. The surface will retain the circular saw marks and any mortise pockets and pegs holes from its original joinery. This material is typically square in dimension – 6×6, 8×8, 9×9 etc. If you would like to do the labor yourself, you can place an appointment to select the timber from the yard.

Live Edge Barn Mantel

Live edge barn beams were created by hand hewing two opposing sides of the tree, leaving the round exterior on the two edges. These were typically used as floor joists  or wall logs in barns and cabins. These mantels are typically created by cutting one rounded live edge off to facilitate installation leaving two hand hewn surfaces and one rounded edge. The availability of rectangular mantels is usually not a problem with this product. If you would like to do the labor yourself, you can place an appointment to select the timber from the yard although the lengths are generally long in this material.

Sanded Redwood Mantel

The As Is Sanded mantel starts with a rough sawn brown or gray timber which is then cut to length and lightly sanded reducing the splinters but retaining the original reddish brown patina characteristic of aged redwood. The surface may have some degree of character marks which result from the nails and bolts we remove and checking resulting from air drying.

Resawn Redwood Mantel

A fresh sawn appearance is created by putting the timber on our horizontal band saw and removing the original face on all four sides. We can take an extremely bowed or twisted timber and create a perfectly straight piece although somewhat smaller than the original. The appearance of the final product will be similar to that of re-sawn green timber although it will usually retain some degree of character marks and checking in the surface. Material slated to be sanded can be saw sized straight first to facilitate installation. Bolt holes can be plugged prior to sawing to minimize the character marks. The sawn appearance works well with contemporary architecture.

Hand Hewn Redwood Mantel

Using broad axes, adz axes, draw knives, and sanders we can create an authentic hand hewn appearance as if it was recovered right off the farm. The material may retain its original character with twisting and checking, or can be sawn first to create a perfectly straight piece prior to adzing. Hand hewn redwood has its own unique, wonderful appearance.

Surfaced Redwood Mantel

A surfaced appearance similar to that on new lumber can be provided. Surfacing dry reclaimed timber tends to blow out loose knots when passing through the planer. This may require some doctoring on your part prior to the installation, filling the resulting holes. Alternatively, most beams can be surface sanded to achieve the same effect without damaging the knots.
