AS IS DOUGLAS FIR - As the name implies, “As Is” material is delivered to you in the condition it was received by us with visible metal removed and end damage trimmed. This product can have a variety of appearances ranging from a painted or white washed surface to rough circular sawn with the original golden brown patina characteristic of aged Douglas fir. The surface will probably have some degree of character marks which result from the nails and bolts we remove and checking resulting from air drying. Once sandblasted these work great in the traditional Spanish hacienda.

SAWN DOUGLAS FIR

SAWN DOUGLAS FIR - A fresh sawn appearance is created by putting the timber on our horizontal band saw and removing the original face on all four sides. We can take an extremely bowed or twisted timber and create a perfectly straight piece although somewhat smaller than the original. The appearance of the final product will be similar to that of re-sawn green timber although it will usually retain some degree of character marks and checking in the surface. Material slated to be hand hewn or sanded can be saw sized straight first to facilitate installation. Bolt holes can be plugged prior to sawing to minimize the character marks. The sawn appearance works well with contemporary architecture.

SANDED DOUGLAS FIR

SANDED DOUGLAS FIR - An undulating, weathered appearance can be created using a special sander with a variety of sanding discs. We grind and sand the surface removing most of the original patina/paint and round the edges unevenly. This can then be sandblasted after installation to enhance the character. The sanding can be done on the timber as is, or the timber can be saw sized four sides prior to the sanding to straighten and provide uniform sizing.

HAND AND HEWN DOUGLAS FIR

Hand Hewn Douglas Fir
Hand Hewn Douglas Fir

HAND AND HEWN DOUGLAS FIR - Using broad axes, adz axes, draw knives, and sanders we can create an authentic hand hewn appearance as if it was recovered right off the farm. The material may retain its original character with twisting and checking, or can be sawn first to create a perfectly straight piece prior to adzing. Applying our proprietary finish really enhances the antique character of this product. This product can be structurally graded while the hand hewn barn beams recovered off the farm cannot.

SURFACED DOUGLAS FIR

Surfaced Douglas Fir
SURFACED DOUGLAS FIR - A surfaced appearance similar to that on new lumber can be provided. Surfacing dry reclaimed timber tends to blow out loose knots when passing through the planer. This may require some doctoring on your part prior to the installation, filling the resulting holes. Alternatively, most beams can be sanded to achieve the same effect without damaging the knots.

DOUGLAS FIR BOX BEAMS

Douglas Fir Box Beams
DOUGLAS FIR BOX BEAMS - Box beams are commonly used to replace real timbers in locations where using real beams is not practical. They are used to wrap and conceal structural elements such as a glu-lam or steel beam. They are also used where the weight limitations restrict using real beams or where the beams are being retrofitted in an existing condition. The box beam is created by using three matching pieces of 2x material and mitering them together at the corners with 45 degree joints. They can also be created by in essence, hollowing out the center portion of an existing beam, leaving the outer surface. The surface can then be re-manufactured to match the appearance of the material in the order.

HAND HEWN BARN BEAMS - We inventory a huge selection of authentic hand hewn barn beams which are salvaged from antique structures such as barns and cabins dating back to the 1800’s. The material is a mix of hardwoods, (primarily white oak), which the original builder would have harvested from the original forest adjacent to the building site. The beams are usually square, hand hewn on four sides and contain the original mortise and tenon holes and pegs. The beams will have an existing gray patina which can be lightly sanded to reveal a rich brown patina just below the surface.

SAWN BARN BEAMS - Barn beams were also created using a circular saw mill. Although the vintage might not date to the 1800’s, like the hand hewn beams above, these beams usually have a gray surface which can be lightly sanded to result in a mellow brown patina. The surface will retain the circular saw marks.

LIVE EDGE BARN BEAMS - Live edge barn beams were created by hand hewing two opposing sides of the tree, leaving the round exterior on the two edges, usually with the bark. These were typically used as floor joist in the barns and cabins. Once the bark has been removed, the cambium layer is exposed and contrasts beautifully with the hand hewn sides. These are typically split in half and installed on the ceiling with the round edge down, appearing as if there is a much larger beam hidden above the plaster. These are perfect accent beams for Tuscan style architecture.

STANDING DEAD VIGAS - Standing dead vigas result from selective thinning of standing dead trees from various forests under guidelines established by the US Forest Service. They are most commonly available in Douglas fir, Cedar, and Spruce. They are used as an alternative to standard dimensional timber in creating a rustic appearance, especially in architecture featuring a Southwest theme. The surface appearances available include both as is and hand scraped.
